Elie Wiesel was born on September 30, 1928 in Sighet, Transylvania which is now part of Romania. Besides being a holocaust survivor, he is also an author of over fifty books, many of which include personal memories and descriptions of his time spent in concentration camps. He had three siblings: two older sisters and one younger sister. After being liberated from the concentration camp Buchenwald, Wiesel was sent to an orphanage where he was reunited with his two older sisters who had also survived the holocaust. Neither his parents nor his younger sister survived. Before he became a writer, he taught Hebrew and was a choir master. He has received many of awards in his lifetime including the Nobel Peace Prize. He became a citizen of the United States in 1955 and currently resides in Greenwich, Connecticut.
